Our History
The company was founded in 1950 by local Castlemaine boilermaker Clarrie Armstrong. With fifteen years of engineering experience, and at the encouragement of his family, Clarrie began the business in the backyard of the family home.

Through working long hours during the days and teaching welding at the local technical college at night, Clarrie was able to purchase land to build his first proper workshop. Business grew rapidly with engineering contracts, work from the mining trade and general industrial jobs. Diversification into steel, bolts, electrodes, and welding equipment sales led to further growth in the business.
As such in 1960 he started the construction of a much larger factory in Railway Ave, which remains the business centre to this day. True to form, Clarrie built the factory himself, working weekends and any spare time until it was completed.

The building is characterised by its saw-tooth roof design which was a clever architectural approach to shield workers and machinery from direct sunlight while providing uniform natural light across a large area.
Armstrongs Today
In 1970, Clarrie's oldest son John joined the business on his return from the Vietnam war and continues to manage the factory floor today.
John has a keen interest in all sorts of engineering machinery, enjoys solving complex engineering problems, metal industrial artworks and talking to the variety of customers that come through the large factory doors.
Armstrongs has continued for over 70 years thanks to the hard work and dedication of Clarrie, Esma, John and Glenda Armstrong.
It is what our family business is all about.
